The name Youmu Tang is taken from the Nan Shi (the work of an historian) - Fu Zhao's biography: “Brothers should be friendly and live in harmony, cultivate themselves, work hard, and avoid discourtesy.” Thus the name of the Hall celebrates the virtues of friendship and harmony. It also evokes The Book of Rites - King Wen Shi Zi where it is written: “Teach them to respect their elder,s to bring relatives together in harmony and to be kind to the people.”

Youmu Hall is also called Xiaofenlimen Hall. It comprises two halls at the front and back. It was built by four brothers of the 29th generation, Wu Zhenwen, Wu Zhenwu, Wu Zhentao and Wu Zhenlue [1690-1786, Yixiangsheng (Xiucai)]. According to records, this hall was built in the Qing Dynasty and was, for a time, somewhat dilapidated. It was renovated more recently and is now in a better state of preservation. As it now stands, there are two courtyards, with a foyer, a front courtyard and a principal hall on the central axis. The two-storey principal hall is three rooms wide. The front courtyard is surrounded by eaves gallery and was surfaced with pebbles, that have now been largely lost, leaving simply an area of yellow clay. The current house is thus rather dilapidated. Xiaofenlimen hall(小份里门堂) (front) was built by the 30th generation Wu Qingxun (1743-1819).
