The root ancestor of the Wu family at Xianju County, Wu Quanzhi (吴全智), moved from Suichang (遂昌) to Xiali (下砾) (present-day Village Wuqiao(吴桥), Tianshi Town, Xianju). His descendants have flourished in the areas between Kuocang Mountain (括苍山)and Yong'an River (永安溪) for more than a thousand years from the Tang Dynasty's Guanghua Era (898-900) to the present day. The tenth ancestor, Wu Wei, settled down in Houren (厚仁), and his second son, Wu Chun, moved to Gaoqian (高迁), where he became the root ancestor of the Wu family at Village Gaoqian. The Wu family moved from the Xiali (下砾, literally lower place) to Gaoqian (高迁, literally higher place), working hard to create “a land where we find our place (爰得我所).” This is a place of natural beauty, where one imagines the gods would choose to live. The Wu family added to the natural beauty of the place, constructing a pleasant hometown with halls, pagodas, forests and ponds. Anyone who has visited the ancient village of Gaoqian, walking through its halls and rooms, must have stopped to admire the exquisite carvings and read the elegant couplets. Surely, they will share the feelings described here: this is an idyllic place inspiring thoughts that are poetic, warm-hearted, solid, yet endowed with vitality.
