Wu Yunzhao (1061-1121), the great-grandson of Wu Fu (吴福), was a “particularly generous man”. One year when there was a famine and many people could not afford to eat, someone facetiously wrote on the front door of his house, the words. “Tomorrow will be a great day of giving.” Believing this to be true, people near and far, young and old came to ask for grain. Instead of being annoyed, Wu Yunzhao was delighted and said, “This is helping me to do good things!” He then opened his warehouse to help people through the disaster and saved the lives of many people. Wu Yunzhao had six sons, Shi Xi, Shi Yu, Fan Zhu (as a monk), Shi Nan, Shi Meng and Shi Dan. None of Yunzhao’s ancestors was a high official but he earnestly advised his descendants to study. Wu Fu (吴芾), the son of Shixi who was Wu Yunzhao’s second son, together with cousins Wu Yong and Wu Qian achieved the highest rank in the imperial examinations in succession and became prominent.
